I Took The Good Times, I'll Take The Bad Times...

Awalnya aku tidak begitu suka dengan lagu “Just The Way You Are”-nya Billy Joel. Aku pernah  mendengarnya sekilas dan enggak terlalu suka dengan lirik lagunya. Kok ada kata-kata, ‘don’t go changing some new fashion, don’t change the colour of your hair”? Menurutku perubahan itu bagian tidak terpisahkan dari kehidupan. Kalau kita terus stagnan, terus apa artinya hidup? Bukankah kita harus selalu melakukan langkah-langkah continous improvement? Dan orang tercinta sudah seharusnya mendukung langkah-langkah kita itu, bukan malah membuat kita stagnan, apapun alasannya.

Namun pendapatku tentang lagu itu agak berubah saat beberapa bulan lalu aku les conversation bahasa Inggris. That evening, my teacher made the class listen to a song and he asked us to write down the verbs from the lyric. Ternyata lagu “Just The Way You Are” itulah yang diputarnya. Lagunya diputar dua kali. Saat diputar untuk yang pertama kalinya, aku enggak terlalu memperhatikan musik dan liriknya, aku cuma fokus mendengarkan verb-nya saja. Saat diputar untuk kedua kalinya, aku mulai memperhatikan liriknya dengan sungguh-sungguh, juga memperhatikan musiknya. Oh iya, liriknya bisa dilihat di sini.

Setelah didengarkan dengan saksama, ternyata musiknya asyik juga. Menenangkan banget. Enak juga duduk di pojok kelas sambil menikmati musik. Rasanya di situ cuma ada aku, yang lain cuma ngontrak, haha...bercanda ding. Musiknya bikin rileks, dan aku benar-benar suka sama bunyi-bunyian dari brass section di bagian menjelang akhir lagu.

Selain itu aku menemukan sebuah kalimat yang bagus banget di situ.

"I took the good times, I'll take the bad times"

How sweet :)

Seolah-olah makna dari kalimat sederhana nan powerful itu begini: 

"I really enjoy your companion and I think you are very awesome. Borrowing a sentence from a novel i have ever read: Every language in this world would fail in saying how much and with what disinterested passion I am ever yours. But I know that you are a human. Therefore, like me, you are not perfect. And if you ever lose your cheerfulness and your coolness -things that made me fall for you for the first time- remember that i will be here to cheer you up. To let you know that you are still the very same person i fall in love with, person that I will always like and appreciate. You are still the same person behind all of your problems and I believe that you can face it".

Hehehe memang sotoy banget ya aku ini. Yah, itu tadi interpretasiku sendiri tentang potongan lirik lagu Just The Way You Are-nya Billie Joel sih. Suka-suka aku dong ;p namun aku tidak setuju 100% dengan lirik lagu itu, hanya saja aku benar-benar suka dan setuju dengan kalimat "I took the good times, I'll take the bad times" itu :) Lagu lain yang memiliki lirik yang hampir semakna dengan "I took the good times, I'll take the bad times"-nya Just The Way You Are adalah lirik dari lagu I'll Stand by You dari grup The Pretenders (lirik bisa dilihat di sini).

"I'll Stand by You. Take me into your darkest hour, and I'll never desert you"

Seperti pula lagu Just The Way You Are, aku pun tidak bisa setuju 100% dengan keseluruhan lirik lagu I'll Stand by You. Namun aku setuju dengan kalimat itu :)
